From Numbers to Decisions: A Statistics and Statistical Reporting Workshop

Summary

Decision-makers rarely have a shortage of data — what they usually lack is data turned into something they can actually act on. Statistical agencies produce huge volumes of numbers and indicators every year, but those figures stay useful mainly to statisticians and specialists until someone translates them into a clear, timely report.

That translation is exactly what this workshop from the Arab British Fellowship Training Academy is built to teach. Participants work through the full statistical toolkit — from core measures and SPSS to regression and forecasting — and finish by learning how to package it all into a report that a non-specialist can actually use.

The goal throughout is decision support: giving planners, policymakers, and organizational leaders accurate, timely information to plan, track progress, and evaluate performance with confidence.

Objectives and target group

Who Should Attend?

  • Middle management directors.
  • Employees in information management centers.
  • Statistical analysts and researchers.

Program Objectives:

  • Introduce the basic concepts of statistics and their importance in research.
  • Cover field data collection methods and statistical research approaches.
  • Train participants on statistical tools, including a full introduction to SPSS.
  • Build computer-based data analysis skills for scientific research.
  • Enable participants to write scientifically sound statistical reports.

Course Content

  • Module 1: Statistics Fundamentals and Data Types

    • What statistics is, and the difference between descriptive and inferential statistics.
    • Population and census: defining who and what you are actually measuring.
  • Module 2: Measuring and Summarizing Data

    • Core statistical measures and measures of central tendency.
    • Absolute measures of dispersion, and understanding skewness in a dataset.
  • Module 3: Visualizing and Presenting Data

    • Methods for presenting statistical data and information clearly.
    • Statistical tables, charts, and graphical forms; the statistical scatter diagram and forms of spread.
  • Module 4: Introduction to SPSS for Data Analysis

    • Getting started with the SPSS statistical analysis software.
  • Module 5: Regression, Prediction, and Forecasting

    • Continuous vs. discrete functions, and the linear regression equation using least squares.
    • Statistical forecasting methods, and comparing results automatically against the least squares method.
    • Using the logarithmic curve and the statistical prediction (forecast line) equation.
  • Module 6: Writing and Delivering Statistical Reports

    • What a statistical report is, and the different types and formats it can take.
    • Descriptive analysis (analytical reading) and full statistical analysis using research and study data.
