Protecting the Respiratory System: Daily Habits and Prevention

Summary

Why do respiratory diseases keep climbing in today's cities? Part of the answer is pollution and smoke, which are especially concentrated in major urban centres, and part of it is how common these conditions have simply become: an estimated 300 million people worldwide live with asthma, a number that keeps rising, while pneumonia and lung cancer claim thousands of lives every year. In this course, provided by the Arab British Fellowship Training Academy, we cover how to protect the health of the respiratory system and prevent these chronic conditions before they take hold.

Objectives and target group

How Participants Benefit From This Programme:

  • Identify respiratory diseases and the warning signs that call for medical attention.
  • Apply the three core habits for protecting respiratory health.
  • Avoid the pollutants and infection sources that put the respiratory system at risk.

This Course Is Designed For:

  • People seeking to specialize in hospital management, from medical backgrounds.
  • Students and graduates of medical and health colleges and institutes.

Course Content

Module 1: Food as Medicine — Nutrition for Stronger Lungs

  • Iron-rich foods, such as vegetables, green peppers, and red meat, and their role in carrying oxygen through haemoglobin.
  • Omega-3-rich fatty fish, including tuna, salmon, and herring, and its benefit for asthma-related airway issues.

Module 2: Movement and Breath — Why Exercise Helps, Not Hurts

  • Common misconceptions about exercising with a respiratory condition.
  • Suitable activities, including walking, jogging, cycling, and swimming, and the value of consulting a doctor first.

Module 3: Cutting Out the Biggest Threat — Smoke and Secondhand Exposure

  • How inhaled smoke damages the cilia that filter allergens, mucus, and dirt from reaching the lungs.
  • The scale of harm: each cigarette contains more than 4,000 harmful substances.
