Training Course in Modern Sound Engineering Methods (Online / Remote)

Summary

Behind every clean broadcast voice, polished song or dramatic sound effect sits a sound engineer's decisions – choices most audiences never notice consciously, but instantly feel when they are missing. Over the past few decades the craft has evolved fast: sound engineering can now reshape audio quality, hide imperfections and bring out the beauty in a recording, whether that means adding effects and custom music to a television production, enhancing an advertisement, or shaping a song's rhythm from fast to slow to classical.

The Arab British Fellowship Training Academy built this Modern Sound Engineering Methods course for anyone who wants to learn these techniques properly: audio re-recording, filtering, and the modern software used for sound work worldwide.

Objectives and target group

Target Audience:

  • Managers and owners of television channels and radio stations.
  • Managers of the sound engineering department in television production companies, and all personnel working in it.
  • All personnel involved in audio re-recording, and in sound purification and filtering in the studio.

Knowledge and Benefits:

This course equips participants with new skills and effectively activates their abilities through:

  • Introducing sound, its specifications and unit of measurement, and explaining the elements of sound and how to handle them.
  • Introducing analog and digital audio signals and how to work with them.
  • Familiarising participants with various recording devices and their usage methods, and with microphones, their types and how to use them.
  • Familiarising participants with recording studios, their setup methods and standard ratios.

Course Content

  • Module 1: Understanding Sound and How the Ear Works
    • The human ear, its structure and how it captures sound vibrations.
    • Elements of sound and their characteristics, and how to work with them.
    • Analog and digital audio signals: the difference between them and the recording method for each.
  • Module 2: Recording Equipment and Studio Setup
    • Analog and digital recording devices, and the different media used for recording.
    • Microphones: types, characteristics and stands.
    • Recording studios and how to prepare them (control room or studio floor), including their standard ratios.
    • Speakers: types (portable and stationary) and distribution methods.
  • Module 3: Editing and Mixing Techniques
    • Audio editing and mixing using non-linear recording devices on computers.
    • Mixing audio for film versus television, and the difference between the two.
    • Isolating and mixing different sounds through non-linear editing devices.
  • Module 4: Professional Software and Advanced Curricula
    • Advanced global curricula in the art of sound engineering.
    • The latest software used in sound engineering work.
    • Skills for working with Pro Tools for audio editing.
  • Module 5: Applied Sound Engineering Skills
    • Skills for recording audio in the studio (songs and music), and sound engineering work within television programmes.
    • Skills for working with audio filters, sound balancing, purification and filtering.
    • Skills for adding sound effects during programmes, video clips or audio recordings, plus hands-on practical training.
  • Module 6: Course Delivery – Venues and Formats
