Bridge Engineering: Design, Structural Analysis and Service-Life Management Training Course

1Summary

A bridge that is designed and built to a high standard can still lose years of service life if its maintenance programme is weak — deterioration, not construction quality, is usually what determines how long a bridge actually lasts. This training course works from that premise, giving participants a practical grounding in bridge engineering that links design and structural analysis decisions directly to how a bridge will perform, deteriorate, and get maintained over decades of service.

Participants build applied skills in bridge design and structural analysis, working through span, loading, and site considerations for common bridge types, before moving into construction sequencing and the practical challenges that arise on bridge sites. A significant part of the course is dedicated to reading deterioration signs early, selecting the right maintenance or rehabilitation response, and understanding how individual bridges function within a wider regional infrastructure network.

This program is delivered by Arab British Fellowship Training Academy through its Bridge Engineering: Design, Structural Analysis and Service-Life Management Training Course, built to give civil and structural engineers well-rounded, practical bridge engineering capability.

2Objectives and target group

By the end of this training course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand how design decisions influence long-term bridge maintenance and service life.
  • Select appropriate bridge design solutions based on span, loading and site conditions.
  • Apply structural analysis methods to evaluate bridge behaviour under real conditions.
  • Understand key construction methods and sequencing for different bridge types.
  • Identify common bridge deterioration mechanisms and assess structural condition.
  • Select and implement maintenance and rehabilitation strategies that extend service life.
  • Recognise the role of bridges within infrastructure networks and apply relevant codes and standards.

Target Group

  • Structural and civil engineers involved in bridge projects
  • Bridge design engineers and structural analysts
