Training Course in Reducing the Long-Term Burden of Chronic Disease

1Summary

By the time a chronic disease is diagnosed, most of the story has usually already been written — by risk factors that went unscreened, lifestyle patterns nobody intervened on, and health systems built to treat rather than prevent. Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity now account for the majority of the world's disease burden, and this training course from the Arab British Fellowship Training Academy is built to change that trajectory. It equips healthcare professionals with the knowledge and practical tools to intervene earlier and prevent non-communicable diseases (NCDs) from reaching the point of crisis.

The course works through the evidence base behind chronic disease prevention, epidemiology, behavioral science, and health promotion, and turns it into practice: lifestyle interventions, screening programs, and patient education that hold up in both clinical and community settings. Participants leave able to design prevention strategies grounded in real risk data rather than generic advice.

2Objectives and target group

Who Should Attend

This training course is built for healthcare professionals involved in preventing, diagnosing, or managing chronic conditions, whether they work directly with patients or through public health initiatives aimed at reducing the chronic disease burden. That includes:

  • Physicians: general practitioners, family medicine doctors, and specialists.
  • Nurses and pharmacists involved in chronic disease management, medication adherence, and preventive care.
  • Dietitians, nutritionists, and health coaches focused on lifestyle and behavior change.
  • Public health professionals working in community health, population health, and epidemiology.
  • Mental health professionals addressing the psychological side of chronic illness.
  • Community health workers engaged in health literacy and patient education.

What You Will Be Able to Do

  • Explain the global burden of chronic disease and the risk factors driving it, from lifestyle to genetics to environment.
  • Apply primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention strategies appropriate to each stage of chronic disease.
  • Design health education and behavioral-change programs that actually shift patient habits, not just awareness.
  • Build screening and early-detection pathways that catch disease before it progresses.
  • Evaluate public health initiatives and health system approaches through a lens of health equity.
  • Implement sustainable prevention practices across both clinical and community settings.

3Course Content

Module 1: The Real Cost of Chronic Disease

  • The global burden of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity, and why non-communicable diseases now dominate demand on health systems.
  • Core risk factors: diet, inactivity, smoking, and genetic predisposition, plus the environmental contributors that often get overlooked.
  • Why early risk assessment changes a chronic disease's trajectory, not just how early it gets diagnosed.

Module 2: Stopping Disease Before It Starts

  • Primary prevention through lifestyle change: physical activity, dietary intervention, and smoking cessation.
  • Screening and early-detection tools, including cardiovascular, diabetes, and cancer screening, and why timing matters more than the test itself.
  • Turning screening results into secondary prevention action before disease progresses.

Module 3: Getting Patients to Actually Change Behavior

  • Motivational interviewing and practical techniques for patient education.
  • Personalized wellness programs that sustain behavior change rather than deliver one-off advice.
  • Building health literacy and patient empowerment as the foundation for long-term adherence.

Module 4: Designing Health Promotion at Community Scale

  • Case studies from anti-smoking, obesity prevention, and diabetes prevention campaigns: what worked and why.
  • Embedding health equity into population-level prevention strategy design.
  • Coordinating inclusive campaigns that reach underserved and high-risk communities.

Module 5: Managing, Measuring, and Sustaining Results

  • Tertiary prevention: reducing complications and supporting patients already living with chronic disease.
  • Medication adherence and co-managing multiple chronic conditions at once.
  • Using data collection and health surveillance to evaluate program effectiveness.
  • Building sustainable practices that hold up in clinical and community settings long after the pilot ends.
