ECG, Patient Monitor & Infusion Device Maintenance and Certification Training Course

1Summary

A patient monitor that misreads a heartbeat, or an infusion pump that drifts out of calibration, can turn a routine shift into a crisis. This Training Course by the Arab British Fellowship Training Academy is built around that reality — it takes biomedical technicians and clinical engineers deep into the three device families that keep patients safe minute to minute: ECG machines, patient monitors, and infusion pumps. Rather than teaching each device in isolation, the course threads a common set of skills — calibration, fault-finding, certification testing — through all three.

Participants leave able to service, certify, and document these devices in line with FDA, CE, and ISO expectations, connect them safely into hospital networks, and keep a maintenance programme running that catches problems before they reach a patient.

2Objectives and target group

  • Service, calibrate, and troubleshoot ECG machines, patient monitors, and infusion devices to a consistent professional standard.
  • Prepare and certify each device type against FDA, CE, and ISO requirements, and produce the documentation regulators expect.
  • Apply electrical safety practices — grounding, insulation, leakage testing — whenever devices are opened for servicing.
  • Run a preventive maintenance programme that reduces unplanned downtime across all three device families.
  • Connect active medical devices into hospital data networks securely, and manage the interoperability challenges that come with it.

Target Audience

  • Biomedical engineers, technicians, and clinical engineers who maintain, test, and certify active medical devices.
  • Service providers and manufacturers' representatives supporting ECG, patient monitor, or infusion device installations.
  • Healthcare staff involved in operating and calibrating diagnostic and therapeutic equipment.
  • Regulatory and quality assurance professionals in hospitals and medical device manufacturing.

3Course Content

Module 1: Why Active Devices Matter — Categories and Regulatory Landscape

  • Definitions and categories of active medical devices, and their role in patient care and safety.
  • Introduction to global medical device standards (ISO, IEC) and the regulatory bodies behind them.
  • Why certification and compliance sit at the centre of the medical device industry.

Module 2: ECG Machines — Operation, Calibration and Fault-Finding

  • Core principles and components of ECG machines and their diagnostic role.
  • Routine maintenance and calibration steps for accurate readings.
  • Diagnosing power, signal, and display faults, and resolving calibration discrepancies.

Module 3: Patient Monitors — Operation, Calibration and Fault-Finding

  • How single- and multi-parameter monitors measure vital signs.
  • Calibrating monitored parameters — ECG, blood pressure, temperature — and routine checks.
  • Diagnosing SpO2, NIBP, sensor, and connection issues.

Module 4: Infusion Devices — Operation, Calibration and Fault-Finding

  • Types of infusion devices (syringe, volumetric, PCA pumps) and their working principles.
  • Calibration for accurate fluid delivery, and the role of alarms and safety features.
  • Resolving flow-rate errors, occlusions, air bubbles, and programming faults.

Module 5: Certification and Compliance Testing

  • Testing and certification procedures for each device type.
  • Applying FDA, CE, and ISO certification requirements in practice.
  • Validating performance and safety before a device returns to service.

Module 6: Electrical Safety and Safe Servicing Practices

  • Electrical safety regulations, grounding, insulation, and leakage current testing.
  • Minimising electrical hazards during maintenance and repair.
  • Emergency protocols and device shutdown procedures.

Module 7: Preventive Maintenance Programmes and Advanced Troubleshooting

  • Building a preventive maintenance schedule that reduces wear and extends device life.
  • Advanced troubleshooting strategies using diagnostic tools and software.
  • Learning from real-world case studies of complex device failures.

Module 8: Connected Devices — Data, Integration and Network Security

  • Interoperability between ECG, patient monitor, and infusion devices in integrated healthcare systems.
  • Secure data transmission between devices and hospital systems.
  • Common connectivity challenges and best practices for device integration.

Module 9: Documentation, Audits and Regulatory Record-Keeping

  • Certification documentation requirements and accurate record-keeping.
  • Preparing for regulatory audits and inspections.
  • Maintaining compliance records across a device fleet.
