Lean Thinking for Distribution, Logistics and Supply Chain Teams Course

1Summary

Every distribution network loses money to waste it never measures — idle inventory, duplicated handling, trucks that run half-empty, warehouse staff waiting on paperwork. The Lean Thinking for Distribution, Logistics and Supply Chain Teams course, delivered by the Arab British Fellowship Training Academy, starts from that reality rather than from theory. Participants work through the core ideas of Lean — value, flow, pull and continuous improvement — but always in the context of a live distribution network, a logistics operation or a multi-tier supply chain.

Rather than treating Lean as a manufacturing import, the course reframes it around the customer: what does the end customer actually value, and how much of the current process adds nothing to that value? Participants leave with a working knowledge of the tools used to find and remove waste — value stream mapping, Kanban, 5S, and root-cause techniques — plus practical experience from case studies of companies that applied them successfully in distribution and logistics settings.

2Objectives and target group

Who Should Attend?

  • Supply chain and distribution executives responsible for network performance.
  • Logistics specialists and warehouse managers.
  • Operations directors looking to cut waste without cutting service levels.
  • Trainers and consultants working in Lean-related fields.
  • Anyone contributing to the efficiency of a distribution or logistics operation.

Objectives and Benefits:

  • Apply Lean principles to reduce waste and variability across distribution and logistics operations.
  • Use value stream mapping and other Lean tools to spot bottlenecks before they cost money.
  • Cut operational costs through better inventory, transport and warehousing decisions.
  • Improve delivery speed and reliability, and with it customer satisfaction.
  • Draw on real case studies to avoid the common pitfalls of Lean implementation.

3Course Content

Module 1: The Cost of Waste in Distribution Networks

  • How unmeasured waste shows up in inventory, transport and warehouse handling
  • The history of Lean and why it moved beyond manufacturing into logistics and supply chain
  • Value, flow, pull and perfection: the vocabulary Lean uses to describe a healthy process

Module 2: Core Lean Concepts and Tools

  • Value stream mapping to expose bottlenecks and non-value-adding steps
  • Just-in-Time and Kanban systems adapted for distribution
  • The 5S system for organising workspaces and reducing search time
  • Root cause analysis and structured problem-solving

Module 3: Streamlining Distribution Networks

  • Optimising distribution network design
  • Identifying value streams within the distribution process
  • Reducing waste at each handoff between distribution partners

Module 4: Lean Logistics and Inventory Optimisation

  • Reducing stock levels without hurting customer satisfaction
  • Streamlining transportation routes and warehousing layout
  • Metrics for tracking Lean logistics performance

Module 5: Building a Lean Supply Chain Culture

  • Connecting Lean practice to overall supply chain efficiency
  • Collaborative strategies and shared goals across supply chain partners
  • Kaizen and continuous improvement in multi-tier networks
  • Overcoming resistance to change and complex, multi-tiered logistics networks

Module 6: From Pilot to Practice — Rolling Out Lean Distribution

  • Real-world case studies of Lean distribution and logistics success stories
  • Lessons learned from companies that implemented Lean at scale
  • Building a Lean implementation plan and leadership structure tailored to your organisation
  • Actionable steps for initiating and scaling Lean across distribution, logistics and supply chain operations
