Practical Training Course in Building Thermal Insulation and Heat Loss Control
1Summary
Every degree of heat that leaks through an uninsulated wall or roof has to be replaced by a heating or cooling system, at a direct cost in energy and money. As energy prices climb and green building codes tighten, thermal insulation has shifted from a finishing detail to one of the first decisions made in any construction or retrofit project.
The Practical Training Course in Building Thermal Insulation and Heat Loss Control, offered by the Arab British Fellowship Training Academy, takes participants from the physics of heat transfer through to hands-on material selection, installation and long-term performance management. Fibrous, foam, reflective and next-generation smart materials are all covered, alongside the roof, wall and floor techniques used to apply them correctly.
Participants finish the course able to choose the right insulation strategy for a given building, climate and budget, avoid the installation mistakes that silently waste energy, and connect their insulation decisions to green certification outcomes such as LEED and BREEAM.
2Objectives and target group
Target Audience
- Architects and designers who need to integrate insulation into the overall building plan from the earliest design stage.
- Construction engineers, contractors and building inspectors responsible for installing and verifying insulation on site.
- Energy managers, consultants and facility managers assessing and improving insulation performance in existing buildings.
- Sustainability consultants, along with students and researchers, pursuing careers in energy-efficient or green building design.
Course Objectives
- Explain the physics of heat transfer and how insulation interrupts conduction, convection and radiation.
- Compare fibrous, foam and reflective insulation materials and match them to the right application.
- Apply correct roof, wall and floor insulation techniques while avoiding common installation errors.
- Manage moisture control, vapour barriers and air sealing to protect insulation performance over time.
- Calculate the return on investment of an insulation upgrade and identify available incentives.
- Connect insulation choices to green building certifications and to emerging materials such as phase-change compounds and aerogels.
