Construction Project Leadership Training Course: Engineering Management in Practice

1Summary

Construction projects rarely fail because of a single mistake — they slip because planning, cost control, contracts and dozens of stakeholders pull in different directions at once, and no one in the room has the engineering depth to pull them back together. As projects grow larger and more technically complex, that gap between engineering knowledge and project leadership becomes the single biggest risk to delivery.

The Construction Project Leadership Training Course by the Arab British Fellowship Training Academy closes that gap. Participants build the planning, scheduling, cost, risk and contract management skills needed to lead a construction project end-to-end, while strengthening their ability to coordinate technical and administrative teams and resolve the operational challenges that come up along the way.

2Objectives and target group

Who Should Attend?

  • Civil and architectural engineers working in the management and execution of construction projects.
  • Project managers and technical supervisors seeking to develop their managerial and engineering skills.
  • Planning and follow-up officers in contracting companies and engineering consulting firms.
  • Construction sector professionals aspiring to move into leadership positions.

Programme Objectives

By the end of the programme, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the construction project lifecycle within an integrated engineering management framework, and apply that understanding to real project decisions.
  • Prepare detailed work plans, budgets and schedules with confidence.
  • Monitor execution and control quality, resources and cost effectively throughout delivery.
  • Apply risk management techniques suited to complex, fast-changing project environments.
  • Coordinate between project stakeholders to keep objectives on track from planning through handover.

3Course Content

Module 1: From Concept to Execution — the Construction Project Lifecycle

  • Definition of a construction project and its main phases; characteristics of construction projects and field challenges.
  • Key differences between engineering management and traditional project management.
  • Organisational models for engineering projects, distribution of responsibilities among stakeholders, and managing relationships between owners, contractors and consultants.

Module 2: Planning, Scope and Scheduling

  • Defining objectives and scope of work; needs analysis and resource estimation.
  • Scheduling tools such as Gantt, PERT and CPM; critical path analysis; linking schedules with resource and execution plans.

Module 3: Resource, Time and Team Coordination

  • Allocating resources according to project priorities; addressing schedule deviations and continuous adjustments; managing the impact of delays from suppliers or contractors.
  • Organising effective follow-up meetings, ensuring smooth flow of technical information, and controlling conflicts and overlapping tasks on-site.

Module 4: Cost, Procurement and Financial Control

  • Preparing accurate financial estimates and construction budgets; analysing direct and indirect costs; cost control mechanisms during execution.
  • Preparing tender documents and contract terms; evaluating suppliers and managing award procedures; tracking supply chains.
  • Developing periodic financial performance reports, monitoring deviation indicators, and implementing corrective measures.

Module 5: Quality, Risk and Site Safety

  • Quality systems and standards, inspection and blueprint verification, and technical documentation management.
  • Identifying risk sources, analysing their impact on schedule and cost, and developing response plans.
  • Safety and occupational health standards, incident analysis, and compliance with relevant regulations.

Module 6: Handover, Contracts and Continuous Improvement

  • Preparing for final handover, closure documents and acceptance tests, and reviewing overall project performance.
  • Common types of engineering contracts and their provisions; monitoring contractual obligations; resolving claims and disputes.
  • Reviewing results, documenting experience, and building a knowledge base to improve future engineering practices.
