Settling Marine Insurance Claims: Cargo and Ship Hull Coverage in Practice

1Summary

Piracy, fire, war, jettison, collision, grounding — the list of things that can go wrong at sea is long, and every item on it can trigger an insurance claim. This Arab British Fellowship Training Academy course focuses squarely on what happens next: how marine insurance claims for cargo and ship hulls actually get processed and settled, giving participants the practical grounding to manage insurance for employees in companies and organisations and apply marine insurance terms correctly.

Marine risks are formally defined as those arising from maritime navigation and the unexpected incidents that come with it: perils of the sea, fire, war, piracy, sea robbery, looting raids, arrest, seizure, detention or restraint by rulers or people, jettison, treachery by a ship's captain or crew, and any similar or other risks explicitly named in the policy. Coverage can also extend to fire, explosion, grounding, sinking, capsizing, collision, or contact between the ship and any object other than water.
