Health Insurance Management and Accounting for Corporate Programmes

1Summary

When an employee ends up in hospital, what happens next comes down to how well an organisation's health insurance programme is actually managed, not just how it is written on paper. At its core, insurance is a contract: an insurer agrees to pay compensation, usually a defined sum, when a covered event occurs, and the insured pays fixed premiums, monthly or annual, in return. That basic idea has evolved alongside the economy and social life for years, and modern states now treat organised insurance as a mark of a developed system, a shared mechanism against risk that gives individuals real peace of mind that someone will cover the loss.

Health insurance applies that logic to medical care: a pre-payment plan, or cash compensation for care during sickness or disability, defined by a legal policy whose terms vary from one country to the next depending on its economic, scientific and healthcare development. In many countries, governments share this responsibility with health insurance companies, which run day-to-day operations, case control, condition assessment, and accounting with hospitals, pharmacies and other health centres. Done well, health insurance speeds up access to hospital care, expands the capacity to deliver services, helps finance hospitals, doctors and facilities, and opens up spare and optional care within health institutions.
