Training Programme

Electric Motor Protection and Maintenance Training Course

1Summary

When an electric motor fails, it doesn't just stop turning — it stops the entire production line behind it, which is why the Arab British Fellowship Training Academy built this Training Course around keeping motors running rather than just fixing them after the fact. Electric motors come in a wide range of sizes and uses across industrial settings, classified by the type of current they draw and the load they carry.

The course walks through the procedures used to maintain high-power electric motors, along with the periodic maintenance routines suited to each motor type — because in the end, the motor remains the heart of the machine, driving the production wheel with it.

2Objectives and target group

Who Should Attend?

  • Supervisors and workers in electrical maintenance.
  • Electrical engineers and electrical maintenance technicians in laboratories.
  • Energy engineers and staff in factories and critical facilities.

Knowledge and Benefits:

By the end of the programme, participants will be able to:

  • Identify common motor malfunctions and the types of complements used to protect motors.
  • Apply protection methods and master the basic vocabulary used across different motor types.
  • Recognise motor components such as carbon brushes, commutators, and slip rings.
  • Follow established methods for maintaining electric motors and running periodic checks, especially on motors that affect worker safety or production rates.

3Course Content

Module 1: Motor Types and Operating Principles

  • Introduction to the maintenance concept as applied to electric motors.
  • Operating principles, installation, and classification of DC, AC induction, and AC synchronous motors.

Module 2: Common Faults and Protective Complements

  • Typical faults in DC, induction, and synchronous motors.
  • Types of complements: overload, overcurrent, and differential complements.

Module 3: Protection Systems for Electric Motors

  • Protection against overload, overcurrent, and insulator breakdown.
  • Protection against phase contact with ground, rotor failures, source imbalance, lighting current loss, and phase imbalance.

Module 4: Maintenance Practice and Periodic Checks

  • Maintenance procedures for electric motors of all types and why maintenance matters.
  • Periodic inspection routines, especially for motors affecting safety or production.
  • Course locations across the Academy's centres in over 30 countries, delivered through hands-on, theoretical, group, institutional, or classroom training formats, ending with an accredited certificate.
