Training Course in Marine Pollution Control from Oil Spills (Online / Remote)

1Summary

A single oil spill at sea does more than kill wildlife on the surface — it disrupts a marine system that plays a direct role in regulating the planet's climate, since oceans absorb enormous amounts of heat and drive the water cycle that produces rainfall. Understanding that chain of cause and effect is the starting point for this training course from the Arab British Fellowship Training Academy, built for anyone who wants to understand the damage oil pollution causes at sea and how to bring it under control.

Defining marine pollution precisely has taken the combined effort of scientific bodies and international organizations focused on the marine environment, and the definition that has emerged is broad: any human activity that alters marine life and its surroundings, from coastal development and oil and gas extraction to gravel mining, sewage disposal, and industrial waste. Among all of these, oil waste, spills, and gas-production leaks remain some of the most dangerous sources of marine pollution.

2Objectives and target group

Who Should Attend?

  • Directors and owners of oil extraction institutions.
  • Staff working in environmental departments.
  • Petroleum engineers, and staff in petroleum facilities security and environmental control.
  • Work quality control staff in oil facilities.
  • Accounting department directors in oil, gas, and petrochemical companies.
  • Oil workers based in oil and gas fields.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Build experience relevant to the oil industry.
  • Recognize the importance of seas and the need to protect their environment.
  • Lead teams focused on eliminating sources of marine pollution.
  • Apply methods for cleaning spilled oil from shorelines.

3Course Content

Module 1: Marine Pollution — Causes and Consequences

  • The causes of marine pollution and the harm it causes to the environment.
  • The effect of oil leaks on surrounding environments, including the marine environment as a whole.

Module 2: Oil Fundamentals — Formation and Extraction

  • How oil forms, and the processes of excavation and extraction.
  • Formation, drilling, and extraction of oil and natural gas.

Module 3: Preventing and Responding to Oil Leaks at Sea

  • Methods of preventing marine pollution and controlling oil leaks.
  • Causes of oil contamination and the sources of oil leaks.
  • Reviewing case examples, including tanker explosion and sinking incidents.

Module 4: Cleanup and Containment Techniques

  • Treating and removing spilled oil from water.
  • Methods for cleaning shorelines of spilled oil.
  • The foundations and conditions needed for protection methods to succeed.

Module 5: Internal Controls and Cost Oversight for Prevention Programs

  • The definition and importance of internal audit, and internal control systems.
  • Listing and preparing financial statements for costs tied to oil facilities and extraction operations.
  • Building accounting skills for the costs of stored petroleum reserves and refinery cost drafting.
  • Creative methods and solutions for reducing the overall cost of oil extraction and its derivatives.

Module 6: Building Safety Systems to Prevent Future Pollution

  • Establishing and developing the quality of the occupational health and safety management system.
  • Setting up joint arrangements for occupational health and safety management.
  • Creating and developing risk identification, assessment, and control procedures.
  • Evaluating information sources about the work environment and analyzing it to eliminate negative impacts on oil production.
