Training Course in Digital Tools for Surveying and Spatial Planning (Online / Remote)

1Summary

A boundary dispute between two landowners, a national infrastructure plan, and a city's zoning map all rest on the same foundation: accurate spatial data. When that data is managed manually, small errors compound across large areas and years of records – which is exactly the gap computer-based surveying and planning tools were built to close.

Spatial planning emerged in the second half of the 19th century alongside the industrial revolution and matured into a full field by the mid-20th century. It is inherently interdisciplinary, bringing together geographers, architects, landscape designers, construction managers, environmentalists, and economists to shape sustainable communities and places where people live, work, and move.

Urban and spatial planners today work across housing, economic development, environmental protection, and infrastructure – and increasingly rely on computer applications to manage surveying activities, model risk in large areas, and evaluate the relationships between logistical and production systems.

The Arab British Fellowship Training Academy presents this course for professionals who want practical skills in applying information technology to surveying and spatial planning work.

2Objectives and target group

Who Should Attend?

  • Directors and owners of engineering establishments.
  • Project managers of civil engineering projects, and heads of spatial planning departments.
  • Engineers and staff working across engineering departments.

Knowledge and Benefits:

After completing the program, participants will be able to:

  • Apply technical software programs to internal and external surveying activities.
  • Prepare draft spatial plans and review planning documents for implementation.
  • Characterize, evaluate, and manage crises, risks, and safety across large areas.
  • Analyze and model relationships between logistical systems, production systems, and spatial areas.

3Course Content

Module 1: From Manual Records to Digital Spatial Planning

  • How the concept of spatial planning developed from the industrial revolution to a mature interdisciplinary field.
  • Definition and importance of cadastral and surveying activities.
  • Why computer applications improve accuracy and management of spatial activities.

Module 2: Technical Tools for Surveying Work

  • Applying technical software programs across surveying activities.
  • Types of internal and external surveying work.
  • Following up on and ensuring the use of the latest surveying techniques.

Module 3: Preparing and Reviewing Spatial Plans

  • Preparation methods for draft spatial plans.
  • Reviewing planning documents and programs ahead of implementation.
  • Training engineering staff and surveying teams on up-to-date methods.

Module 4: Managing Risk and Systems Relationships Across Large Areas

  • Characterizing, evaluating, and managing crises, risks, and safety over large spatial areas.
  • Analyzing and modeling relationships between logistical systems, production systems, and spatial areas.
  • Managing the full range of internal and external surveying activities in a coordinated way.
