Petroleum Health and Safety Management Training Course (Online / Remote)

1Summary

One overlooked leak, one poorly maintained valve, one skipped inspection — in the oil sector, small gaps in safety turn into major incidents faster than in almost any other industry. That is the reality this course is built around: giving safety officers, engineers and technicians the knowledge and skills a genuinely safe petroleum work environment depends on.

Health and safety management sits at the centre of continuity and productivity in the oil industry, alongside protecting people and the environment. Handling hazardous materials, running complex processes, and managing environmental risk all demand a system that actually works — which is exactly what this course, delivered by the Arab British Fellowship Training Academy, is designed to build through a full mix of lectures and practical topics.

2Objectives and target group

Knowledge and Benefits

  • Build a clear understanding of the health and safety risks tied to oil operations.
  • Develop the skills to identify and assess risk across different work environments.
  • Apply effective safety strategies and procedures, and make sound safety-related decisions on operational sites.
  • Implement health and safety standards in line with international regulations and laws.

Who Should Attend

  • Managers and safety officers in oil companies.
  • Engineers and technicians working across the oil and gas sector.
  • Safety coordinators in drilling, refining and transport operations.
  • Anyone looking to build their knowledge of health and safety management in the oil industry.

3Course Content

Module 1: Foundations of Health and Safety in the Oil Industry

  • Core occupational health and safety principles, and the direct relationship between safety and productivity.
  • Why worker health matters specifically in the oil environment, and how safety practices protect both people and a company's reputation.
  • Key international regulations such as OSHA and HSE standards, alongside the local and regional laws that apply.

Module 2: Understanding and Assessing Risk

  • A full classification of the physical, chemical and environmental risks tied to extraction and refining.
  • Risk-analysis techniques such as HAZOP and FMEA, and the tools used for daily risk inspection.
  • How to collect and analyse data to prepare an accurate risk-assessment report with actionable recommendations.

Module 3: Site Safety Requirements and Company Responsibility

  • Safety requirements specific to drilling, extraction, transport and storage sites, including compliance during emergencies.
  • What companies are responsible for in implementing safety regulations, the inspection mechanisms that check compliance, and the penalties for falling short.

Module 4: Emergency Preparedness and Incident Response

  • Building comprehensive emergency plans for different scenarios, with roles and responsibilities defined in advance.
  • Setting protocols for handling incidents, and preparing the resources and equipment needed for an immediate response.
  • Coordinating with local and international emergency and rescue teams, and with government bodies during a response.

Module 5: Operational Safety Across Drilling, Refining and Transport

  • Preventive measures during drilling — managing pressure and temperature, and keeping equipment inspected and maintained.
  • Preventing major accidents such as explosions and fires, with early-detection techniques and regular PPE checks.
  • Safety in refining operations around flammable chemicals and toxic fumes, and in transport — pipeline inspection, safe transport techniques, and safe loading and unloading of petroleum products.

Module 6: Environmental Protection and Workplace Design

  • Reducing air and water pollution and gas emissions, and managing waste and hazardous materials.
  • Designing a safer workplace through engineering controls, ventilation, environmental conditions and slip-resistant surfaces.
  • Selecting and providing the right personal protective equipment, and building worker awareness of why it matters.

Module 7: Training, Monitoring and Continuous Improvement

  • Designing training programmes based on global safety practices, using interactive techniques such as live simulation, and measuring their impact with performance indicators.
  • Continuous digital monitoring of emissions, equipment condition and safety standards, backed by regular, documented site inspections.
  • Analysing inspection results and incidents — including root-cause analysis — and turning the findings into corrective actions and prevention strategies that reduce future incidents.
