Healthy Nutrition Essentials Training Course (Online / Remote)
1Summary
What actually makes a meal "healthy"? It isn't a single ingredient or a strict diet — it's the balance between several essential nutrient groups working together. Get that balance wrong, and even a diet that looks disciplined on paper can leave the body short on what it actually needs.
Because proper nutrition is directly tied to a disease-free, healthy life, the Arab British Fellowship Training Academy designed this course to help participants understand these essential elements and apply that understanding to real, everyday food choices.
2Objectives and target group
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify the five nutrient groups a balanced diet depends on: protein, fat, sugar, vitamins, and water, and explain what each one actually does in the body.
- Recognize protein's role in building hormones and red blood cells, and where to find it in meat, legumes, eggs, and nuts.
- Distinguish between saturated and unsaturated fats, found in oils such as olive, corn, and cottonseed oil, and explain their role in vitamin transport and metabolism.
- Explain why sugar, found in vegetables, fruits, and grains, is the body's main energy source, and what happens metabolically when it's missing from the diet.
- Describe how vitamins, abundant in fruits like kiwi and in some vegetables, support the body's biological and metabolic processes.
- Explain why water, which the body obtains through drinking and food and loses through urine and perspiration, is just as essential to health as any of the other groups.
This course is designed for:
- Nutrition and public health professionals.
- Anyone looking to build healthier, more balanced eating habits.
- Trainers and educators who want to pass on accurate nutrition knowledge.
3Course Content
Module 1: Carbohydrates and Energy
- Sugars and starches as the body's main source of energy and heat, found in potatoes, pasta, bread, rice, and pastries, and in smaller amounts in dairy, vegetables, and fruit.
- Daily needs of roughly 300 to 400 grams, and why any excess gets stored as fat and contributes to weight gain.
Module 2: Protein and Body Structure
- Why the body can't store protein the way it stores fat, making daily intake essential for building hormones, muscle and nerve tissue, and blood cells.
- Complete proteins (meat, fish, poultry, dairy, eggs) versus incomplete proteins (soybeans, lentils, peanuts).
- Typical daily needs of 60 to 70 grams, or about 1 gram per kilogram of body weight, rising during intense physical activity, pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
Module 3: Fats — Balance, Not Elimination
- Animal fat, found in butter and fish, versus plant-based fat, extracted from sources like olive oil.
- Why excess animal fat is harmful, even though the body only needs a modest 60 to 70 grams of fat per day.
Module 4: Vitamins and Minerals
- The 13 internationally recognized vitamins, essential for the body's vitality, with deficiency linked to a range of illnesses; found mainly in fruit, vegetables, dairy, and dairy products.
- Minerals critical during growth: calcium and phosphorus for bone-building, iron for blood, plus sodium, magnesium, zinc, copper, and chromium, abundant in dairy, vegetables, and fruit.
Module 5: Water — The Overlooked Essential
- The body holds around 57 liters of fluid and loses about 5 liters a day through urine, sweat, evaporation, and breathing.
- Why roughly eight cups of water a day are needed to avoid disruption to the body's functions.
