The Role and Functions of Health Care: A Training Course (Online / Remote)

1Summary

Health care sits at the intersection of two very different conversations: one about community wellbeing, and another about economic value. On the social side, it plays a central role in tackling public health problems; on the economic side, the health workforce itself is treated as a vital asset, and it is through their efforts that a higher standard of care is achieved.

Making that standard available to everyone without discrimination is part of what universal health insurance is meant to achieve, alongside broader economic and social welfare — which is exactly the ground this training course covers.

The Arab British Fellowship Training Academy built this course specifically to unpack what health care functions look like in practice, and how they connect to wider development goals.

2Objectives and target group

Core Functions of Health Care

Health care systems concentrate on containing chronic diseases such as heart and artery disease, lung disease, cancer, and diabetes, alongside epidemics like tuberculosis, AIDS, and cholera. In practice, this translates into three core functions:

  • Prioritizing these chronic diseases and epidemics through awareness campaigns run across health centers and other public venues, to limit their spread.
  • Supplying appropriate technology and health services to reduce the disease burden, and setting standards for allocating resources efficiently across the health sector.
  • Securing commitment from both private and public sectors to deliver what people actually need without excessive cost, paired with public education on the importance of accessing health care.

Who Should Attend

  • Anyone connected, directly or indirectly, to public health issues.
  • Managers and coordinators within health care departments.
  • Medical field professionals.
  • Graduates of pharmacy, public health, and related programs.
