Most people picture solar power as a rooftop panel converting sunlight straight into electricity. Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) works differently and, at utility scale, can outperform that model: fields of mirrors or lenses focus sunlight onto a single point, generating enough heat to boil water and spin a conventional steam turbine - the same principle power plants have used for a century, just with the sun as the fuel.
That single design choice unlocks something photovoltaic panels cannot easily do: store energy as heat and keep generating electricity for hours after sunset. It also raises a distinct set of engineering questions, from which mirror configuration suits a given site to how molten salts or other fluids carry and store that heat efficiently.
This course from the Arab British Fellowship Training Academy takes participants through CSP from first principles to project delivery - covering the main technology families, site selection and plant design, thermal storage and heat-transfer fluids, and the financial and project-management skills needed to take a CSP plant from concept to commissioning.
