Heating water and industrial process fluids consumes a substantial share of global energy demand, and much of it still comes from burning fuel rather than capturing the free heat the sun provides every day. Solar thermal systems close that gap: instead of turning sunlight into electricity like photovoltaic panels, they capture it directly as usable heat, an approach that is often cheaper and more efficient for jobs like heating a home's water tank or feeding steam into a factory process.
Collector technology has matured well beyond a simple black panel on a roof. Flat-plate and evacuated-tube collectors now serve everything from single homes to hotel complexes, while concentrated solar power arrays use mirrors or lenses to reach the high temperatures needed for steam turbines and industrial heat. Choosing between them is mostly a question of climate, required temperature, and the type of load being served.
This training course from the Arab British Fellowship Training Academy walks participants through that decision-making process end to end - from the physics of heat transfer, to sizing a system, selecting and placing collectors, and keeping a plant running safely and economically for years. Along the way we examine where solar thermal already pays for itself today, from swimming pools to district heating networks and farms, and where the technology is heading next.
