Querying and Managing Data with SQL: A Practical Training Course

Summary

Raw data sitting in a database is not useful on its own - someone has to be able to ask it questions, and SQL is the language almost every system in the world uses to do that. This training course from the Arab British Fellowship Training Academy builds that ability from the ground up, so participants can retrieve, modify, manage and store data with real confidence rather than guesswork.

Through hands-on practice, participants construct SQL queries, work directly with tables, run advanced calculations, and connect related data across multiple tables using join techniques - skills that apply to almost any relational database they will encounter afterwards, not just the examples used in class.

Objectives and target group

Knowledge and Benefits:

By the end of the programme, participants will be able to:

  • Write SQL queries with correct syntax and confidence.
  • Manage data within databases comprehensively using SQL.
  • Perform advanced operations such as filtering, sorting and joining tables.
  • Create and modify databases and tables.
  • Apply SQL effectively in real-world work environments.

Who Should Attend?

  • Beginner developers who want to learn SQL from the basics up to advanced techniques.
  • Data analysts looking to sharpen their data-management and querying skills.
  • Database specialists who want a deeper, more effective grasp of SQL.
  • Technology students aiming to master SQL as part of their academic or professional path.

Course Content

Module 1: Why SQL Matters

  • What SQL is and how it is used in database management.
  • How SQL differs from other programming languages.
  • The importance of SQL in data analysis and software development.
  • Popular database management systems such as MySQL, PostgreSQL and Oracle, and how to choose between them.

Module 2: Anatomy of a Database

  • Tables, rows and columns, and the relationships between them.
  • Different data types, such as text, numbers and dates.
  • Primary keys and their role in keeping records unique.
  • Foreign keys for linking tables, and constraints such as UNIQUE, CHECK and DEFAULT for data integrity.

Module 3: Creating Databases and Tables

  • Using CREATE DATABASE, including basic naming rules.
  • Using CREATE TABLE and defining appropriate data types for each column.
  • Applying basic constraints such as NOT NULL and UNIQUE, and adding indexes to improve performance.

Module 4: Retrieving Data with SELECT

  • Writing SELECT queries and choosing which columns to retrieve, including DISTINCT for unique results.
  • Filtering data with WHERE, comparison operators (=, >, <, BETWEEN) and logical operators (AND, OR, NOT).
  • Sorting results with ORDER BY, in ascending or descending order and across multiple columns.

Module 5: Changing Data Safely

  • Inserting new rows with INSERT INTO, including multiple rows in one query.
  • Updating existing data with UPDATE and targeting records precisely with WHERE.
  • Deleting data with DELETE, and understanding the difference between DELETE and TRUNCATE.

Module 6: Connecting Tables with JOIN

  • Using INNER JOIN to combine tables and retrieve shared data.
  • Using LEFT JOIN to retrieve all records from the first table, including unmatched ones.
  • Using RIGHT JOIN and comparing it with LEFT JOIN.

Module 7: Calculations, Functions and Advanced Queries

  • Arithmetic operators and mathematical operations on columns, including handling NULL values.
  • Aggregate functions such as COUNT(), SUM() and AVG(), combined with GROUP BY and HAVING.
  • String and date functions such as CONCAT(), LENGTH(), SUBSTRING(), NOW(), DATE() and YEAR().
  • Writing subqueries and using IN and EXISTS within them.
