A child who avoids eye contact, freezes in front of new people, or refuses to join in group activities is not necessarily withdrawn by nature — shyness is often a learned, involuntary reaction to fear or apprehension, and distinguishing it from simple humility is the first step to helping a child through it.
This Understanding and Managing Shyness in Children course equips childcare and child-health professionals to recognise the psychological, social, and physical factors behind shyness, tell its different forms apart, and respond in ways that build a child's confidence rather than reinforce the behaviour. It is part of a wider set of health, safety, and mental-health courses the Arab British Fellowship Training Academy offers to people who work with children.
Why Children Feel Shy
There are several factors that contribute to a child's sense of shyness:
Taken together, these factors typically show up as: feelings of inferiority in body and senses, wrong upbringing methods, developmental delay, a lack of security and a sense of fear, and growing up in a family where shyness itself runs in the household.
