The success or failure of a news bulletin is decided long before it goes on air – it is decided in how the script is built. A strong bulletin usually opens with the story that carries the most weight and closes with something lighter on the audience, and every piece of writing in between has to serve that structure. This Arab British Fellowship Training Academy course is built around exactly that discipline.
The course also looks closely at the role of the newscaster, the person who reads the script at the final stage of production. A newscaster who is involved earlier – in editing or preparing the news itself, a role known in newsrooms as the editor-newscaster – brings far more to the bulletin than one who simply reads. The course covers how tools like the teleprompter solve the classic problem of maintaining eye contact with the audience while reading, and how newsroom staffing models differ, from a single all-round newscaster to separate presenters for general, sports, and economic news.
