Hazard Studies and Safeguard Verification for Startup Safety Training Course (Online / Remote)

Summary

No amount of paperwork makes a hazardous facility safe to start up, only rigorous hazard studies and verified safeguards do. This training course puts that principle into practice, walking participants through the sequence of hazard identification, deviation analysis and safeguard verification that has to be completed, and demonstrably closed out, before hydrocarbons or hazardous materials are introduced.

Participants will build practical competency in applying HAZID techniques early in project development, conducting structured HAZOP studies to identify process deviations, and using LOPA to verify that protection layers are genuinely adequate. The course also covers the PSM framework that ties these studies together and the structured approaches needed to ensure startup safety. It is delivered by Arab British Fellowship Training Academy through its Hazard Studies and Safeguard Verification for Startup Safety Training Course.

Objectives and target group

By the end of this training course, participants will be able to:

  • Apply HAZID techniques to identify hazards early in project development
  • Plan and participate effectively in HAZOP studies
  • Use LOPA to verify the adequacy of safeguards and protection layers
  • Understand the structure and requirements of PSM frameworks
  • Apply structured approaches to ensure startup safety across process facilities
  • Apply relevant standards and best practices to process safety readiness

Target Group

  • Process safety and process engineers involved in project readiness
  • HSE professionals responsible for hazard studies and risk assessment
  • Commissioning engineers coordinating safety verification before startup
  • Operational readiness and startup managers overseeing hazardous facilities
  • Engineers advancing their expertise in process safety readiness

Course Content

Why Process Safety Readiness Comes Before Startup

  • The role of Process Safety Readiness in safe facility startup
  • Common gaps that undermine process safety readiness
  • Key principles linking process safety and operational readiness

Identifying Hazards Early: HAZID

  • Applying HAZID methods early in project development
  • Identifying major hazards before detailed design is finalized
  • Linking HAZID outcomes to later safety studies

Structured Deviation Analysis: HAZOP Studies

  • Planning and facilitating structured HAZOP studies
  • Identifying deviations, causes and consequences
  • Tracking and closing HAZOP actions before startup

Verifying Safeguards: LOPA

  • Applying LOPA to assess protection layer adequacy
  • Verifying independent protection layers before startup
  • Using LOPA results to support risk-based decision-making

Process Safety Management as the Governing Framework

  • Core elements of a PSM framework
  • Integrating PSM requirements into readiness planning
  • Verifying PSM implementation ahead of startup

Ensuring Startup Safety

  • Structured approaches to verifying startup safety across facilities
  • Coordinating process safety verification with commissioning activities
  • Preparing for safe introduction of hazardous materials

Practical Application

  • Case studies in Process Safety Readiness and startup safety
  • Common process safety challenges during readiness and practical solutions
  • Lessons learned from real process safety and startup experiences
