Instructional Design and Learning Content Development Training Course (Online / Remote)

Summary

A learner can sit through a perfectly accurate lesson and still walk away with nothing – because content that is correct is not automatically content that teaches. What separates the two is design: how information is sequenced, visualised, worded and adapted to the person receiving it. Arab British Fellowship Training Academy built this training course around that distinction, developing participants’ ability to turn subject knowledge into instructional material that learners actually absorb and retain.

The course balances educational theory with hands-on design practice, covering how to read a learner's needs, structure content logically, apply visual and language principles that aid comprehension, and adapt material across traditional and digital formats. By the end, educators and trainers are equipped to produce engaging, learner-centred material that turns measurable learning objectives into real outcomes.

Objectives and target group

  • Instructional design is what turns raw subject knowledge into material that actually teaches – this course builds that capability from the ground up.
  • Master the Fundamentals of Effective Design: Understand what separates instructional materials from generic teaching aids, and the principles that make content clear, accurate and logically sequenced.
  • Design for the Real Learner: Analyse learner types and educational needs, and set precise, measurable learning objectives that guide every design decision.
  • Structure and Visualise Content: Organize material for easier comprehension and apply visual design principles – colour, typography, imagery – that support rather than clutter the message.
  • Write and Adapt Across Formats: Use clear, engaging language and convert content into multiple formats suited to both traditional and e-learning environments.
  • Assure Quality and Longevity: Review content for accuracy and compliance, and design it to be easily updated as needs evolve.

Target Audience

  • Teachers and trainers in educational and training institutions.
  • Instructional designers and academic developers.
  • Content managers on e-learning platforms.
  • Professionals interested in curriculum development and instructional material design.

Course Content

  • The difference between instructional materials and general teaching aids
  • How well-designed materials support understanding and comprehension
  • Clarity, accuracy, logical sequencing and motivation as core design characteristics

Module 2: Know Your Learner First – Classification, Styles and Objectives

  • Visual, auditory and kinesthetic learners, and individual differences in comprehension
  • Designing content that fits different learner types
  • Setting precise learning objectives across cognitive, psychomotor and affective levels, using action verbs and linking objectives to content and assessment

Module 3: Structuring the Educational Plan

  • Building main and subheadings that organize a lesson clearly
  • Sequencing content from simple to complex
  • Including interactive activities within the plan (conceptually)

Module 4: Organizing Content So It Actually Sticks

  • Using tables and concept maps to clarify relationships between ideas
  • Deliberate repetition of core information to aid retention
  • Connecting new lessons to previously learned concepts

Module 5: Visual Design and Language That Engages

  • Using colour, typography and imagery effectively, and avoiding visual clutter
  • Selecting illustrations that reinforce rather than distract from content
  • Writing in simple, clear language, avoiding unfamiliar terminology, and sparking learner curiosity

Module 6: From Draft to Digital – Multi-Format Content Production

  • Preparing content as PDFs, presentations and interactive text
  • Meeting the requirements of e-learning materials
  • Choosing the right tools for digital content design

Module 7: Quality Assurance and Future-Proofing Content
