Decarbonisation Strategy Training Course for Energy Managers (Online / Remote)

Summary

Energy managers today are being asked a question their predecessors rarely faced: not just "is the plant running efficiently?" but "how much carbon is it putting into the atmosphere, and what happens if that number doesn't fall fast enough?" This Decarbonisation Strategy Training Course from Arab British Fellowship Training Academy is built around that question.

Rather than starting with theory, the course opens with the commercial and regulatory reality energy managers now operate in: international commitments such as Kyoto, Paris, and Net Zero 2050 targets, and the Scope 1, 2, and 3 accounting that turns those commitments into numbers a facility has to report. From there, attendees learn to read a carbon footprint the way they would read an energy bill.

The training then moves into what can actually be done about it - the policy instruments that reward renewable energy and efficiency investment, and real case studies of low-carbon initiatives, including where they ran into trouble. Attendees look at the full range of renewable options, from solar and wind to geothermal, biofuels, and nuclear, alongside emerging technologies such as hydrogen fuel cells and energy storage.

The final stretch of the course goes hands-on with where energy is actually lost and recovered: HVAC and chillers, building envelopes and lighting, and, on the industrial side, motors, pumps, steam boilers, compressed air systems, and power generation through turbines and combined cooling, heat, and power.

Objectives and target group

Objective: by the end of this course, attendees will be able to:

  • Read and interpret Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions data for a facility, and connect it to international climate commitments.
  • Build a low-carbon strategy using proven policy instruments and lessons from real-world case studies.
  • Evaluate renewable energy sources - solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, biofuels, and nuclear - for a given site's needs.
  • Identify and close energy efficiency gaps across buildings, transportation, and industrial equipment.
  • Engage stakeholders and lead low-carbon initiatives with confidence.

Who Should Attend?

This course is ideal for:

  • Energy Managers and Energy Engineers
  • Energy Auditors
  • Policy Makers and Government Officials
  • Renewable Energy Enthusiasts
  • Corporate Sustainability Managers
  • Project Managers
  • Consultants and Advisors
  • Students and Researchers

How Will Attendees Benefit?

  • A practical low-carbon toolkit: tools, techniques, and policies used in reducing carbon footprint, integrating renewable energy, and sustainable energy planning.
  • Sharper energy efficiency practices: practical ways to monitor energy use and cut emissions without sacrificing performance or output.
  • Regulatory peace of mind: alignment with national and international regulations such as net-zero targets and carbon reporting standards.
  • Real cost and operational gains: savings from efficiency, waste reduction, and better resource use.
  • Leadership readiness: the project and leadership skills to direct sustainability campaigns inside your own organisation.
  • Global best practice and networking: real case studies from successful low-carbon projects, and connections with peer professionals for future initiatives.

Course Content

Module 1: The Business Case for Cutting Carbon

  • Global climate commitments and what they mean for energy managers (Kyoto, Paris, Net Zero 2050)
  • GHG emissions and Scope 1, 2, and 3 accounting
  • Measuring and calculating a facility's carbon footprint
  • Key stakeholders shaping low-carbon decisions

Module 2: From Policy to Practice: Building a Low-Carbon Strategy

  • Policy instruments that reward renewable energy and efficiency
  • Case studies of low-carbon initiatives that worked
  • Common challenges in implementing low-carbon strategies

Module 3: Renewable Energy Options on the Table

  • Solar, wind, and hydro power (including tidal, wave, and current)
  • Geothermal, biofuels, and biomass
  • Nuclear and emerging decarbonisation technologies (hydrogen fuel cells, energy storage)

Module 4: Where the Energy Actually Goes: Efficiency in Buildings, Transport, and Industry

  • Buildings and transport: HVAC, chillers, water heating, heat exchangers, building envelope, and lighting
  • Industrial systems: electric induction motors, fans, cooling towers, pumps, steam boilers, and compressed air
  • Power generation: turbines and Combined Cooling, Heat and Power (CCHP)
