Preventing the Next Incident: An Advanced Course in Gas and Fire Safety Management for Oil and Gas Operations (Online / Remote)

Summary

Every major fire or gas incident in the oil and gas industry traces back to the same root cause: a hazard that was identified too late, or a safety system that wasn't tested enough to catch it. The Arab British Fellowship Training Academy built this advanced course to close that gap, giving safety professionals the technical depth and operational judgment to manage fire and gas hazards before they escalate, across upstream, midstream, and downstream facilities.

The program works through hazard identification and quantitative risk analysis, then into the engineering side — detection systems, suppression, ventilation, instrumentation, and system integrity — before moving to the operational and leadership dimensions: emergency response, incident investigation, offshore safety, and the regulatory and community obligations that come with operating high-risk facilities. Participants leave equipped to design, monitor, and continuously improve fire and gas safety systems in line with current international standards.

Objectives and target group

Who Should Attend?

  • Safety officers and managers working in oil and gas facilities.
  • Operational supervisors responsible for health and safety compliance.
  • Engineers involved in plant design, safety system integration, and hazard analysis.
  • Emergency response coordinators in petroleum production or refining sites.

Knowledge and Benefits:

By the end of the program, participants will be able to:

  • Apply fire and gas detection technologies effectively across oil and gas operations.
  • Assess fire hazards and design practical risk mitigation strategies.
  • Work within regulatory frameworks and compliance obligations for hazardous operations.
  • Plan and coordinate emergency response for fire and gas incidents.
  • Build integrated safety management systems aligned with global industry standards.

Course Content

Module 1: Why Fire and Gas Safety Is Non-Negotiable in Oil and Gas Operations

  • Fundamentals of fire behavior and flammable gas classification in hydrocarbon processing.
  • How process conditions escalate safety risk.
  • International codes and standards (NFPA, API, IEC) and operator legal responsibilities.

Module 2: Identifying and Quantifying Risk — Hazard Assessment and QRA

  • Techniques for identifying fire and gas hazards and classifying hazardous areas.
  • Methodology for conducting Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA).
  • Interpreting consequence and frequency analysis, and its limitations.

Module 3: Controlling the Risk — Strategies, Suppression, and Explosion Protection

  • Elimination, substitution, engineering, and administrative controls.
  • Firewater, deluge, foam, and dry chemical suppression systems.
  • Safe storage, handling, and explosion prevention for flammable materials.

Module 4: Detecting Danger Early — Gas Detection, Monitoring, and System Design

  • Fixed and portable gas detection systems, and heat, flame, and smoke detection.
  • Detector placement, coverage, redundancy, and zoning principles.
  • Integration with control and emergency shutdown systems.

Module 5: Engineering the Safety System — Ventilation, Instrumentation, and Control

  • Inerting, purging, and ventilation requirements for enclosed facilities.
  • Integration between safety systems and process control, including automatic shutdown and alarms.
  • Functional testing and system validation.

Module 6: Keeping Systems Reliable — Integrity, Maintenance, and Mapping

  • Maintenance and inspection schedules, and Safety Integrity Level (SIL) compliance.
  • Fire and gas mapping techniques and coverage analysis tools.
  • Performance-based versus prescriptive design approaches.

Module 7: Optimizing Facility Safety Design and Performance
