Decarbonizing Industry: Hydrogen and Carbon Capture Technology Course (Online / Remote)

Summary

Global industry cannot reach its climate commitments through renewable electricity alone; heavy sectors like cement, steel and chemicals still need a way to deal with the carbon dioxide their processes produce. Carbon Capture and Storage, or CCS, together with clean hydrogen, is one of the few realistic paths available to close that gap.

This course gives trainees a clear, independent view of where CCS technology stands today and where it is heading, covering the engineering, the business drivers and the policies shaping its adoption. It also connects the dots between carbon capture, hydrogen production and the broader shift away from oil and gas, so participants leave with a practical picture of how these pieces fit together.

Objectives and target group

Knowledge and Benefits:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain how CCS protects the atmosphere from excess carbon dioxide and supports the goals of the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement.
  • Identify the key sectors of the global economy where CCS can contribute to deep emissions reductions.
  • Compare the main carbon capture methods, including post-combustion, oxyfuel and pre-combustion capture.
  • Explain the geological principles behind permanently and safely storing carbon dioxide underground.
  • Assess how CCS complements other low-carbon technologies and unlocks carbon-negative solutions.

Who Should Attend?

  • Energy engineers.
  • Personnel working in the energy sector.

Course Content

Module 1: The Climate Case for Carbon Management

  • Global warming and the carbon budget of our atmosphere.
  • CCS in a nutshell, and where the technology currently stands.
  • Carbon neutrality as a target.

Module 2: Capture Technologies in Practice

  • Combustion and post-combustion capture.
  • Capture by oxyfuel combustion, and pre-combustion capture.
  • Carbon dioxide utilization and carbon-negative technologies.

Module 3: Storing Carbon Underground Safely

  • The transport of carbon dioxide, and why geological storage is used.
  • Rocks suitable for geological carbon storage: reservoirs, seals and traps.
  • Storage in aquifers and depleted oil fields.
  • Trapping carbon dioxide, leakage and monitoring.

Module 4: Decarbonizing Industry and What's Next

  • Heavy industries and manufacturing, and decarbonizing global energy.
  • The role of hydrogen and electricity in the transition.
  • Global storage capacity, CO2 pollution and waste disposal.
  • Future developments and CCS as a global industry.
