A hospital ward is supposed to be one of the cleanest places around, yet infections still break out inside them — and when they do, the fallout can include shutting the facility down and holding staff legally responsible, as has actually happened in more than one hospital. The culprit is rarely dirt in the everyday sense; it is usually a germ that has built up resistance to antibiotics, Staphylococcus bacteria being the best-known example, nicknamed "hospital bacteria" for exactly this reason. A healthy body can usually fight it off, but for patients with weakened immune systems the same bacteria can turn dangerous fast.
That risk is precisely why the Arab British Fellowship Training Academy built this course on infection control in healthcare facilities — to help anyone working toward a higher standard of healthcare understand how bacteria spread even in highly sterilised environments, and how to stop that spread before it reaches a patient.
