Two hundred years ago, economists coined the term ‘urban planning’ while studying economic growth — today it covers far more ground, spanning law, sociology, engineering and environmental policy all at once. This training course from the Arab British Fellowship Training Academy walks participants through how that field actually works and how to shape sound regulations around it.
Urban planning is the scientific method used to design solutions or alternatives for existing or anticipated problems, inside an organised plan with clear policies, objectives and a defined timeframe that accounts for current and future resources. It draws on administration, economics, sociology, environmental science and engineering to assess urban and rural life and engineer solutions to problems such as overpopulation, informal housing, traffic congestion, and the flow of residents between their homes and essential services. A wide range of planning theories exist, all aimed at building more organised, liveable cities.
