Managing Risk Across the Project Lifecycle: Tools, Techniques and Governance (Online / Remote)

Summary

Every project carries uncertainty, and the gap between a project that survives disruption and one that collapses under it is rarely luck – it is how deliberately the team has identified, prioritized, and prepared for risk. As projects grow more complex and cross more borders, treating risk management as an afterthought is no longer realistic; it has to be built into planning from day one.

This program takes participants through a complete, practical approach to project risk – combining qualitative judgment with quantitative modeling, and showing how international standards translate into everyday decisions. Arab British Fellowship Training Academy designed it to leave participants able to embed risk thinking into how they plan, execute and report on projects, not just recite theory about it.

Objectives and target group

Who Should Attend?

  • Engineers and technical staff delivering projects on the ground.
  • Risk officers, analysts and PMO professionals.
  • Project managers and team leaders across industries.
  • Finance and procurement staff supporting project execution.

What You Will Gain:

  • A working method for identifying, evaluating and ranking risks before they turn into problems.
  • Practical response strategies – mitigation, transfer, acceptance and contingency planning – matched to the size of the risk.
  • The ability to monitor, reassess and report on risk continuously, not just at project kickoff.
  • A clear view of how project-level risk decisions connect to organizational strategy and governance.

Course Content

Module 1: Spotting Risk Before It Becomes a Problem

  • What risk and uncertainty mean in a project context, and why unmanaged risk derails outcomes
  • Where risk exposure changes across the project lifecycle
  • Who owns risk: the project manager's role, stakeholder involvement and accountability
  • Identification techniques: brainstorming, checklists, SWOT/PESTLE, expert judgment and lessons learned
  • Sorting risks by source – internal vs. external, technical, financial, environmental and human

Module 2: Turning Judgment Into Priorities

  • Building a risk register and a risk breakdown structure (RBS)
  • Writing a clear risk statement
  • Creating a probability-impact matrix and scoring model
  • Ranking risks by urgency and severity, and escalating the top ones
  • Running expert-review workshops to sanity-check the ranking

Module 3: Quantitative Modeling for Complex Decisions

  • Monte Carlo simulation and decision tree analysis basics
  • Sensitivity and scenario analysis
  • Sourcing reliable data and handling gaps or uncertainty in the inputs
  • Reading and communicating risk distributions to non-technical stakeholders
  • Using quantitative outputs to support planning decisions

Module 4: Responding to Threats and Opportunities

  • Strategies for threats: avoid, mitigate, transfer, accept, and build contingency plans
  • Strategies for opportunities: exploit, enhance, share and accept
  • Assigning response owners and mapping responses into the WBS and schedule
  • Allocating resources and timing for each response

Module 5: Keeping Risk Under Control Through the Project

  • Periodic reviews, updates and key risk indicators (KRIs)
  • Adapting to new and emerging risks, and reassessing scope, time and cost impacts
  • Escalation paths, stakeholder-specific communication and early warning systems

Module 6: Measuring What Matters

  • Designing leading and lagging risk KPIs aligned with project objectives
  • Auditing the performance of risk responses and closing out risk events
  • Tracking residual and secondary risks
  • Building dashboards and automating risk reporting, integrated with project management systems

Module 7: Connecting Risk to Schedule, Cost and Scope

  • Risk buffers, reserves and risk-adjusted scheduling
  • Financial contingencies and risk-based budgeting
  • How scope-related uncertainty affects deliverables and strategic objectives
  • Software platforms that support integrated risk management (Primavera, MS Project and others)

Module 8: Enterprise Governance of Risk

  • Aligning with ERM frameworks such as COSO and ISO 31000
  • Centralized risk oversight through the PMO, and portfolio-level risk views
  • Project vs. program risk dynamics
  • Regulatory expectations and internal/external audit mechanisms

Module 9: Building a Risk Management Plan That Lasts

  • Core components: strategy, tools and techniques, roles, timelines and documentation
  • Using standard templates and embedding them into PMO-approved project documentation
  • Feeding lessons learned back into the process and applying maturity models for continuous improvement
